Born & Bread is about my experience of being diagnosed with coeliac disease. My internal army patiently awaits the ingestion of
gluten - a tasty baguette, or a waffle ice-cream cone perhaps? But I have no intention of sending myself into battle. Instead I
allow myself to navigate the minefield of words that pop into my head. Before too long I find myself centre-stage, bringing to
life the surreal situations arising from the illness. Here, as if indulging in a feast, spoilt for choice, I greedily take on
multiple roles of photographer, healthcare professional, patient and in some cases subject.
Born & Bread
She put her frequent dashes to the bathroom down to wedding nerves
All too often she let her weight get on top of her
She was told that if she wasn't careful she'd waste away
She couldn't believe how big the bags under her eyes had become
Her husband teased her that her teeth looked like piglets' ears;
the consultant said this was a classic feature
The slightest bit of gluten sent her immune system into battle
In her dreams she forgot the KitKat would poison her
To put her mind at rest in hospital she imagined she was seeing herself,
instead of the doctor
She became proficient at disguising her anxiety
Having been completely flat, things were now looking up
About Coeliac Disease
Coeliac disease (pronounced see-liac) is an autoimmune disease, where the body's immune system attacks its own tissues.
This immune reaction is triggered by the ingestion of gluten, a collective name for a type of protein found in the cereals
wheat, rye and barley. In coeliac disease, eating gluten causes the lining of the gut (small bowel) to become damaged and may
affect other parts of the body. For further information please visit Coeliac UK:
